How to Inspect Your Home’s Chimney

Regular inspections and cleaning can help extend the lifespan of your chimney. According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), this component of your home must be cleaned yearly. However, keep in mind that chimney maintenance tasks are best done by a professional chimney sweep

Keep on reading to find out how to inspect your chimney.

Things to Look for Indoors

Check the general condition of all the fireplace chimneys in your home. Look for bricks that have become loose and if the mortar is cracking and falling out. If any of these are present, make sure to have them repaired immediately. Remember that it’s dangerous to have a damaged fireplace in your living spaces.

What to Look for Outside

Outside your home, look up at your chimney from the ground. Walk around your house, and see if there are bricks or mortar coming loose and falling out. Does your chimney have a cover that keeps it safe from the rain, birds, snow, bats and other pests? If there are branches and other debris blocking the top of your chimney, make sure to have them removed.

Be Mindful of Smoke Stains

Another important thing to look for is smoke stains. These stains can indicate that your fireplace chimney is malfunctioning. Stains on your ceiling can be a sign that smoke is escaping from a gap between the hearth and the firebox. It’s a common issue in older homes where the hearth has settled
