The Different Levels of Chimney Inspections

Keeping your chimneys well-functioning for many years means having regular inspections done to make sure that they are kept in good condition and that your home is kept safe at all times. As certified chimney masonry repair and maintenance experts, our team at Chimney Doctors is guided by the three levels of chimney inspections set by the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA). Here are some notes to help give you an idea of what each level entails.

First Level

According to the CSIA, a Level 1 inspection requires examination of “…readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior, interior and accessible portions of the appliance and chimney connection.” This level is the most basic requirement, particularly, for older chimneys to ensure that they are clear of any possible fire hazard. Sweeping may be recommended.

Second Level

Beyond a visual inspection, a Level 2 chimney inspection is deemed necessary in cases of obvious disrepair or damage caused by a fire, earthquake or severe weather. At Chimney Doctors, we may recommend chimney relining at this level to improve efficiency. Level 2 inspections are also required in cases of sale or transfer of home ownership.

Third Level

When Level 1 and Level 2 inspections and recommendations appear insufficient, your chimney may need a Level 3 inspection. A teardown may be needed at this point to access the hidden parts of the structure. There is also a possibility that your chimney will need to be completely rebuilt to avoid putting the rest of your home at risk.

Our Chimney Doctors team draws from over 20 years’ worth of experience, which is why we offer the best chimney inspections, cleaning and maintenance services. We are proud to be a chimney sweep certified by the CSIA and a member of both the National Chimney Sweep Guild and the New York State Chimney Sweep Guild.
