What Can You Expect During a Chimney Scan?

Even if your chimney has no visible signs of damage, you should have it professionally inspected yearly. Routine checks can help detect small issues and prevent them from becoming major problems that can compromise your fireplace and chimney’s safety. Moreover, a thorough chimney scan can reveal forms of damage not easily spotted during a quick inspection.

Here’s what you can expect during a chimney scan.

The Levels of Chimney Inspection

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there are three levels of chimney inspection. The most basic type of inspection is Level 1, which involves examining accessible chimney components. A Level 2 inspection includes everything in Level 1 and a video scan. It’s typically necessary after a chimney fire or if you have altered your chimney system since the last inspection. Lastly, a Level 3 inspection is the most comprehensive check. Professionals might remove some parts of your chimney to assess inaccessible areas they suspect have significant issues.

What Happens During a Chimney Scan?

During a Level 2 inspection, a trained chimney sweep will perform a chimney scan or video scan of your chimney’s interior. They will meticulously examine the flue from top to bottom with a pole-mounted camera. This high-resolution scan can unveil hard-to-spot issues like minute cracks, warping, fire damage and other structural problems. Following the video scan, your chimney sweep will share their findings, allowing you to see the condition of your chimney’s interior first-hand.

Why Is a Chimney Scan Essential?

Chimney scans are indispensable for various reasons. They can detect tiny surface cracks in the chimney liner before they evolve into significant masonry issues or safety hazards. Video scans can locate water leak sources and identify early signs of corrosion. Scheduling regular chimney scans can help you promptly address minor flaws that could later turn into structural damage or pose a fire risk.
