3 Signs Your Chimney Needs Urgent Repair

Homeowners tend to take their chimneys for granted, assuming that these won’t have any problems. When chimneys require repair, however, it must be done as soon as possible. Using a damaged chimney can cause serious fire hazards.

Here are three common signs a chimney is in need of repair.

1. Rusting

If any of the metal components of your chimney are showing signs of rust, it’s time to replace them. Rust is a natural byproduct of weathering and moisture in the air. However, it could also be an indication that moisture is coming into contact with your chimney due to leaks. Rust also indicates that the chimney components are not as strong as they should be. It’s always better to replace these parts, whether the problem is due to weathering or leaks, because rusted metal can crack and flake.

2. Deteriorating Mortar Joints

A chimney relies on mortar joints to hold all of its bricks together. Unfortunately, the mortar joints — like the masonry itself — are susceptible to moisture damage. Water damage indoors can be caused by a variety of issues, so professional inspections are essential in this case. Once you notice signs of damage on your chimney’s mortar joint, call a professional chimney sweep and repair contractor.

Moisture seeping into chimney cracks is especially problematic when temperatures fluctuate. When water seeps into the chimney, it can expand and contract as the temperature changes, putting stress on the masonry and causing cracks to form.

3. White Staining Outside the Chimney

The white color on your chimney might seem insignificant to you, but it’s a good indication that it needs immediate attention. This staining usually occurs when your chimney has too much moisture, which causes the brick-and-mortar joints to deteriorate. It is not uncommon for chimneys to lean or even crumble when this occurs.
