A Quick Guide to Hiring a Chimney Sweep

Chimney work requires a lot of caution and accuracy. Whether it’s a chimney masonry repair job or a routine sweep, it’s important to ensure that the person you’re hiring for the job is properly trained, experienced and equipped to handle the task. Here are some tips.

Look for CSIA Certification

A Chimney Sweep Institute of America (CISA) certification is the standard for chimney sweeps across the country. If your contractors have this credential, you can rest assured that they are qualified to provide a range of services related to the proper use, maintenance and repair of chimneys, fireplaces, stoves and appliances and their venting systems.

Of course, don’t just take their word for it. You can ask for proof of certification of the chimney sweep who will be assigned to your home. In some cases, companies only have certification for the owner while their workers are unqualified or not CSIA-certified. To be sure that the person who will perform work at your home is qualified, ask for the individual’s CSIA ID.

Check if They Are Insured

Chimney work comes with some hazards, so it’s essential for chimney sweeps to be fully insured. In the event that they get injured while performing work on-site, you can be sure that their policy will cover their medical expenses. The company’s insurance should also be able to provide coverage against damage that may occur to your home.

Ask for Current References

Feedback from the company’s past clients can give you an idea about the quality of the service that you’ll be getting. While online review sites can show you some customer testimonials, asking contractors for references allows you to have a quick chat with their previous customers. Ideally, you should ask for names and phone numbers of clients who are in your neighborhood, town or general area.
