Chimney Smoke Test: How Does It Help?

When was the last time you used your chimney? If you haven’t used it for a long time, you may want to perform a chimney smoke test to check the safety of your chimney system. Also known as a chimney leakage test, it is one of the easiest ways to ensure that your flue is safe and will not potentially leak harmful gasses into the rooms above or an adjacent property.

What Is the Importance of a Chimney Smoke Test?

To determine whether there are problems with your chimney flue, you may consider carrying out a chimney smoke test. If there are issues with your flue, it may spread harmful gasses while a fireplace or wood stove is being used. A chimney smoke test simply works by creating pressure in the flue. To try this, make sure that the top and bottom of the chimney are temporarily sealed off. As such, the smoke will go through the spaces between the masonry joints. Smoke may also appear at the points where the flue pipes are connected.

A chimney smoke test should be performed if you haven’t used your chimney in over three years. Alternatively, if you install a new chimney, you may also test the flue out. Moreover, homeowners should also perform a chimney smoke test if they suspect a smoke leak. In the event that there is a chimney leak, be sure to call a professional to inspect your chimney.

How Can You Perform a Chimney Smoke Test?

While it’s best to have a chimney expert perform a smoke test, you can carry out your own basic test to check whether your chimney flue is properly functioning. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. First, close off the chimney, and then warm the flue by burning kindling or paper to get the airflow going.
  2. Next, burn some smoke pellets in the flue opening. If there’s not enough smoke, add a few more.
  3. Then, seal the flue opening once you see smoke.
  4. Finally, look for any signs of smoke filling up the room.
